When did you know you wanted to become a provider?
I knew I wanted to be a provider when I was about 5 years old. I was in and out of the ICU for asthma exacerbations. The doctors and nurses were so kind and loving I knew then I wanted to give back by taking care of kids.
What inspired you to choose your specialty?
I was first a respiratory therapist who cared for very ill children in the ICU. I worked in this capacity for 10 years before I decided I wanted to do more, so I went back to school and became a nurse. I took care of very sick children in the ICU for 4 years and again concluded that I desired more autonomy over the care and treatment plan of my patients. I then went back to school and became a Nurse practitioner. I started my first job in the Emergency department where I worked for 4 years before determining that I wanted to do primary care. I saw so many patients in the emergency department who did not have a primary care provider and could not find one. The shortage in primary care was so great that I felt a pull to do more, so I left emergency medical for primary care.
What conditions or procedures are you especially interested in?
I specialize in a variety of things. I’ve taken the skills I learned from pediatrics, emergency medicine and respiratory therapy and applied them to my practice today. The conditions I specialize in are hypertension, asthma, COPD, weight loss, pediatrics, women health (paps and birth control management), men health, rheumatoid conditions, diabetes to name a few. I also can remove toe nails, repair laceration, abscess I&D and foreign body removal. In the near future I will also be able to place IUD, birth control implants, and mole/skin tag removals.
