MHC Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program Earns ACGME Accreditation
Tucson, AZ – Recognizing the threat the physician shortage represents in Pima County for our community, MHC Healthcare has been working hard to become a Sponsoring Institution for Graduate Medical Education. A Sponsoring Institution is an entity that oversees and supports specialty-training programs (residency).
At this time, MHC Healthcare is very excited to announce that the MHC Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program earned its accreditation this year through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
“The Family Medicine Residency Program will not only provide an engaging community-based learning experience, it will also bring much-needed primary care physicians to our community,” said MHC Healthcare’s Chief Medical Officer and Family Medicine Residency Program Director, Dr. Jenitza Serrano-Feliciano. “The mission is to teach residents the skills and knowledge necessary for them to become competent, innovative and effective physicians who are passionate about community medicine.”
MHC Healthcare expects the Family Medicine Residency Program to have its first set of selected residents start in July of 2023.
A benefit of the Family Medicine Residency Program is that it will prepare a greater number of Primary Care Physicians to deliver needed medical services to patients in our community. The program is planned to have four new residents each year, each of whom will train for a total of three years before they are eligible to take their specialty board certification exam. Residents, under the supervision of attending physicians, will gain knowledge, honing their medical skills through hands-on training, that will teach them how to provide the required care for all ages. MHC Healthcare’s goal is for the residents to be passionate about providing primary care services in a community healthcare setting, and to ultimately choose to independently practice in Pima County.
